More Youth on the Blueline

18 year old Freddie Stephens joins Thunder from Buffalo

Dynamic young defenseman #18 Freddie Stephens adds depth and promise to Thunder’s defensive ranks ahead of upcoming NIHL 1 South season. Freddie join’s from Basingstoke Buffalo, who have sadly had to go on hiatus whilst refurbishments are made to the rink in Basingstoke over the coming year.

Freddie has been with Basingstoke for the entirety of his junior development, getting senior experience in the 22-23 season with Buffalo, as well as one game with Basingstoke Bison in the NIHL. Last season Freddie captained Basingstoke’s U18 team, alongside featuring more consistently for Buffalo in their Play-Off winning campaign in NIHL 2 South. Freddie also represented Team Phillips in the U18 showcase tournament in 2023.

Freddie has the following message for Thunder fans, as he relishes the opportunity to learn and make his mark at NIHL 1 level:

Hi MK Thunder, really excited to be playing with you this season. I will give my all for the club, and will look forward to bringing my defensive game on the ice. I am also excited to continue my development and am very much looking forward to learning from a new coach and working with my new teammates.

Thunder Head Coach moved quickly to offer Freddie the opportunity to head north after learning the unfortunate news from Basingstoke:

We’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to bring Freddie to Thunder for next season – and I would personally like to thank all involved with Buffalo for assisting us in ensuring Freddie will get the chance to play next season and continue his promising development.

I’ve had the opportunity already to watch Freddie practice, and I am confident that we’ve secured a player who will, despite his young age, have a real impact on our season and the league in general. He has a great attitude, and his maturity and calmness provide a solid foundation for him.

The new season is less than a month away, it’s not long now until Freddie takes to the ice as a Thunder player for the first time.

Freddie’s Own & Loan jerseys are available now for £95 each.
