ABOUT THUNDER

PROJECT THUNDERSTORM

Thunder and MK Storm Juniors have launched a new collaborative project, prioritising the development of talented young players from milton keynes and the surrounding areas.

This new partnership will enable both clubs to pool together resources and lay the foundations for a talented stream of MK Junior players into senior hockey. We want to facilitate sustained success for Milton Keynes trained and located players at the top level of our sport, and crucially, for them to remain in MK for their development.

Project Thunderstorm will provide a clear and structured pathway. Collaborative coaching will impact our athletes at a younger age, with ongoing monitoring, support and goal-setting. This new link will guarantee prospect slots each year in Thunder’s roster for players that have come through the MK Storm programme. These players will be allocated through combined decisions made by MK Storm’s Head Coach, Age Group Coaches, Thunder Coaching Staff and Thunder Management.

Players offered places in the programme will be supported by all parties, with additional on-ice training, off-ice resources and support in finding playing and development opportunities elsewhere as required, but with MK remaining as the priority and central club. Our long term project goal is to increase the number of MK trained and located players able to represent the clubs and town in National, International and Professional levels of Hockey both in the UK and abroad.

As well as direct player development benefits, the project also outlines a number of key initiatives designed to have a positive impact on both clubs and the communities we serve. It has become clear, across our sport and other sports worldwide, that partnerships between senior and junior clubs are fundamental for the sustained development of talented, motivated and inspired athletes – who in turn can inspire the next generation in a continued cycle of recruitment, development and achievement.

ADDITIONAL PROJECT IMPACTS

FREE SENIOR HOCKEY

All Milton Keynes Storm members and registered coaches will recieve a free MK Thunder season ticket, in the form of a physical card.

This will mean that everyone has access to watch senior hockey in person and be inspired to continue their own journey in the sport – regardless of their financial position.

COACH EDUCATION

Thunder players will be encouraged and supported to complete their coaching qualifications during their time with the club, with the aim to provide placement opportunities throughout the MK Storm programme.

This will support England Ice Hockey’s goals to increase the number of players with senior hockey experience remaining in the sport in a coaching role, as well as providing a direct relationship between young athletes developing in Milton Keynes and experienced senior players.

Not only does this bolster the size and quality of the coaching pool that Storm have access to, but also offers a post playing career option to Thunder players also.

ATHLETE AT THE CENTRE MODEL

The project prioritises the development of our athletes. Following selection as a ‘prospect’, athletes will be invited to train with Thunder as a regular member of the roster. This will not be at the expense of their junior training or games and these must continue to be prioritised.

Coaches will work together to monitor player performance across both clubs, defining goals, targets and development plans on a player by player basis. Resources can then be shared to maximise the impact.

Players who require playing opportunities elsewhere will be supported by all parties, however instead of having to move elsewhere they will remain attached to MK and have access to ice and development provision.

Thunder will also commit to icing one line of prospects at every home game.
